GMSR appellate attorneys Tim Coates and Nadia Sarkis were recognized today with the Amicus Service Award from the International Municipal Lawyers Association. The award seeks to recognize lawyers who have been actively involved in legal advocacy for and on behalf of local governments and IMLA, and who have done exemplary work to protect and advance local government interests. Coates and Sarkis were recognized for the amicus brief in support of certiorari that they authored on IMLA’s behalf in City of Hayward, California v. Stoddard Nunez (No 20-1006) asking the Supreme Court to resolve a long-standing circuit split: Whether a victim-passenger who is unintentionally shot by a police officer during an effort to stop the vehicle’s driver is “seized” for purposes of the Fourth Amendment. GMSR has been a leader in representing public entities for more than 35 years, including winning seven cases in the United States Supreme Court.
