On November 5, 2008, GMSR partner Timothy Coates presented oral argument in the United States Supreme Court on behalf of former Los Angeles District Attorney and California Attorney General John Van de Kamp, and former Los Angeles Assistant District Attorney Curt Livesay. The case, Van de Kamp et al v. Goldstein, 07-854, concerns the issue of whether absolute prosecutorial immunity bars 42 U.S.C. section 1983 civil rights actions against chief prosecutors and supervising attorneys for policy decisions directing the manner in which cases will be prosecuted. A decision is expected by June 2009. This was Tim’s second case before the Court; he previously represented the County of Riverside in County of Riverside v. McLaughlin, 500 U.S. 44 (1991).
