The California Supreme Court recently invited and appointed GMSR lawyers Jeffrey Raskin and Stefan Love as pro bono counsel to argue in support of a Court of Appeal opinion—Guardianship of Saul H.—in which the Supreme Court had granted review. The case involved important issues concerning the role of California courts in issuing findings that can support a child’s efforts to secure Special Immigrant Juvenile status from the federal government. In reversing the Court of Appeal, the Supreme Court could and did draw on arguments from both sides to reach a decision that strengthens the law’s support for Saul and other immigrants. So while our side “lost,” the law won.
The opinion graciously thanked Jeff and Stefan for their service.
